NANAIMO  — One person has died after a crash in the city’s south end.

Calls to 911 came in on Thursday, Dec. 7 around 2:10 p.m. when a car left Extension Rd. and reportedly flipped multiple times down a small embankment just south of the Extension Rd./Cinnabar Dr. intersection.

First responders were told by witnesses the driver was ejected from the sedan, potentially through the car’s sunroof. No other vehicles were involved.

Police later confirmed the driver, and lone occupant, died at the scene.

No identifying information about the driver is available as investigators notify next of kin and continue examining the area.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue personnel were first on scene, just minutes after the incident and began administering CPR to the driver on the ground.

BC Emergency Health Services paramedics were also on scene shortly after, however ambulances left the area in a routine manner before 3 p.m.

Tire marks appeared to show the vehicle was travelling southbound, up the Extension Rd. hill at the time of the incident.

It’s unknown what circumstances or contributing factors led to the crash.

Crash reconstruction analysts are being called to the scene with impacts to traffic expected for several hours.

Extension Rd. traffic flow was blocked by Nanaimo RCMP at Richardson Rd., with only local vehicles allowed to come and go.

A hard stop of traffic was in place between Cinnabar Dr. and Swordfern Rd. as emergency crews staged in both lanes.

Anyone with dashcam footage or any further information about this incident is asked to contact the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
