PORT ALBERNI – The teens involved in a tragic canoe sinking on Sproat Lake this weekend did not have life jackets or personal floatation devices on board, according to investigators.

Two 16-year old boys were forced to tread water for almost an hour before being picked up by a local boater, while their 17-year old friend drowned.

His body was recovered on Monday from 120-feet below where their canoe had capsized on Saturday off Eagle Point in the central area of the lake.

Investigators say the three were from the North Cowichan area, and their investigation continues.
