NANAIMO — Matthew Wood has a chance to solidify a spot on Canada’s 2024 World Junior Championship team.

The Nanaimo Minor Hockey product was named by Hockey Canada on Tuesday, Dec 5 to its 30-player selection camp roster in advance of the tournament taking place in Gothenburg, Sweden beginning Dec. 26.

Wood, 18, is one of 16 players vying for a forward position on this year’s team, which only has one returning player from last year’s gold medal-winning squad.

The selection camp takes place from Dec. 10 to Dec. 13 in Oakville, Ont.

Wood leads the University of Connecticut Huskies in scoring as a sophomore with seven goals and 12 points in 17 games.

The 6’3″, 190-pound Wood was selected 15th overall by the Nashville Predators at the 2023 NHL Draft this past summer.

Wood excelled on the international stage last April, compiling 13 points in seven games to help Canada win a bronze medal at the Under 18 Championship in Switzerland.
