Man arrested for allegedly attacking Nanaimo homeowner with bat

NANAIMO — A man avoided serious injury after an attacker armed with an aluminum baseball bat tried to get into a south Nanaimo home.

It happened on Friday, Dec. 1 at about 3 a.m., according to a Nanaimo RCMP, who reported a 20-year-old man attempted to get into a Roberta Rd. East home.

Nanaimo RCMP Res. Cst. Gary O’Brien said a man was awoken to the sound of glass breaking on a kitchen window, he then spotted a hand attempting to gain entry.

A scuffle ensued outside the home between the two where the homeowner received minor injuries due to strikes from the bat, however, O’Brien noted the tables turned on the suspect.

“The suspect gets disarmed and now the homeowner has the bat and he’s using it in self-defence to protect himself and his family and his home,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.

O’Brien said the homeowner held the suspect in the carport until police arrived.

He said the suspect was not cooperative with their members and resisted before being contained and then taken into custody.

“The homeowner astutely called 911 and this afforded the opportunity to get there as soon as possible and to intervene to catch the suspect before he could leave and potentially break into another house,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW, who noted the victim called 911 upon hearing the sound of broken glass.

O’Brien said it doesn’t appear the suspect and people in the home are known to each other.

Following the high-risk incident, Calvin Anthony Michael was charged with five offences, including break and enter, assault with a weapon and breaching probation.

He remains in custody and is scheduled to make a court appearance late Friday afternoon.

The incident occurred just off Extension Rd. a block south of Chase River Elementary School.
