NANAIMO β€” A failed ATM theft at a Nanaimo gas bar involved a suspect tying straps to the machine and then attempt to remove it from the Bowen Rd. business with a vehicle.

Nanaimo RCMP say it happened on Friday, Nov. 10 at 3:40 a.m. Involving a lone suspect in a dark minivan with no plates backing up to a door at Chevron Town Pantry convenience store at the intersection of East Wellington Rd.

β€œThe driver then tied straps to the door, reversed the vehicle and smashed the doors open. The suspect then tied the same straps to the store ATM and attempted to pull it out of the store but was not successful.” noted a Nanaimo RCMP news release.

While the suspect failed to secure the ATM, he made off with food from the store and drove off.

Nanaimo RCMP arrived on scene shortly after the incident to find smashed glass and a heavily damaged ATM.

Store security footage showed a suspect wearing a face covering and dark clothing, along with a high visibility vest.

Despite the break-in impacting a secondary rear entrance, the business was open for customers on Friday.
