Cinnabar Valley crash zaps power to south Nanaimo neighbourhood

Oct 27, 2023 | 4:42 PM

NANAIMO — About 1,400 BC Hydro customers in the Cinnabar Valley area are without power following a single-vehicle crash.

It happened on Friday, Oct. 27 at about 3:30 when a sedan with one person aboard went off Extension Rd. near Richardson Rd. and hit a hydro pole.

The road will be closed indefinitely in the immediate area, while detours are available.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue Capt. Jason Battie said the driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital.

“We’re glad that the wires weren’t down on the vehicle, that would have made things much more challenging,” Battie said on scene.

A wooden hydro pole was toppled and wires were brought down as a result of the crash.

It’s unclear what caused the wreck.

The driver was fully conscious and walked into an ambulance.

There were no other injuries.

BC Hydro estimated power would be restored at about 7:15 p.m.
