Minor roof fire impacts Nanaimo childcare facility

NANAIMO — A fire damaged a childcare facility in Nanaimo’s Stephenson Point neighbourhood.

Multiple fire engines were called to the former Lifestyle Health and Fitness Centre on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at about 2 p.m. in response to reports of smoke coming from the roof.

NFR assistant chief Stuart Kenning said the fire resulted from contractors torching the roof, causing a fire to get pulled inside the daycare.

“When crews arrived the building was filled with heavy smoke, everyone was evacuated, there were no injuries and the workers pointed to where the fire was,” Kenning said.

He noted the affected daycare is small and the impact on affected families is not expected to be substantial.

Kenning said the fire and smoke was concentrated to the pool area of the facility.

Fire crews pulled apart the roof bit by bit to get to the source of the blaze, Kenning noted.

“It’ll be under investigation at this time, but the roofing company was on scene when it started.”
