Port Alberni woman killed in motorcycle crash near Qualicum Beach

QUALICUM BEACH — A Port Alberni woman has died following a two-vehicle crash over the long weekend.

Oceanside RCMP, along with Fire Rescue crews from Qualicum Beach and paramedics from BC Ambulance Service were called to Hwy. 4 at the Hwy. 19 junction around 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2.

Sgt. Shane Worth said a motorcycle, which had the 61-year-old woman on board as a passenger, and a vehicle collided at the controlled intersection.

“The preliminary investigation has determined the car was attempting a left-hand turn from westbound Memorial Ave. on to the Inland Island Highway southbound on-ramp and the motorcycle was travelling eastbound through the intersection on Memorial Avenue.”

The passenger of the motorcycle died of their injuries on-scene while the driver of the motorcycle and driver of the car were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police shut the area down to traffic for several hours after the crash, with RCMP Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service attending to further the investigation, along with the BC Coroner’s Service.

The highway re-opened just before 9 p.m.

Worth said alcohol was ruled out as a contributing factor.

Oceanside RCMP remain in control of the investigation and anyone with further information regarding the circumstances of the crash, who haven’t already spoken to police, should contact the Oceanside RCMP detachment at 250 248 611.

It was the second significant motor vehicle incident in the Oceanside region within 24 hours.

On Friday evening, a 69-year-old Parksville man died after colliding with a garbage truck on Hwy. 4A near Dunbar Way.
