Cyclist hospitalized after failing to stop at south Nanaimo intersection

NANAIMO — Police say a cyclist ignored a stop sign leading to a collision with a van which sent the rider to hospital.

Nanaimo RCMP Res. Cst. Gary O’Brien said it happened on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at about 10:40 a.m. on Bruce Ave. at Eighth St. where a witness reported the cyclist riding north in the middle of the road toward the intersection just prior to the incident.

The driver of a van attempting to turn from Bruce Ave. onto Eighth St. then collided with the cyclist.

“If the bike had stopped it wouldn’t have been an issue…the car made a legal left turn,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.

The cyclist has serious, but non-life threatening injuries, O’Brien said.

“He was conscious, alert and taken to hospital for testing.”

While O’Brien confirmed the driver of the van did nothing wrong, he said there is no indication the cyclist was or will be ticketed.

It’s not clear if the cyclist, a 48-year-old Nanaimo man, was wearing a helmet.

The Bruce Ave./Eighth St. junction is a four-way stop intersection.
