One dead after head-on highway collision in Parksville

PARKSVILLE – One person was pronounced dead on scene following a two vehicle incident.

Emergency services including Parksville Fire Rescue, BC Ambulance and Oceanside RCMP were called to Hwy. 4A near Dunbar Way just after 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1 after a vehicle collided with a garbage truck.

A spokesperson from BC RCMP told NanaimoNewsNOW a 2008 Dodge Nitro traveling north on the highway through the city collided head on with a southbound garbage truck.

The driver of the car, a 69-year-old Parksville man, was tended to at the scene but died of his injuries.

The operator of the garbage truck was uninjured.

Police closed a section of the highway for roughly three hours to conduct an investigation including crash reconstruction experts and other departments.

The BC Coroner’s Service also attended the scene.

The highway reopened to traffic after 7 p.m.

An investigation into the circumstances leading up to the crash is underway.
