Unhoused Parksville man charged after two people stabbed

PARKSVILLE — One man is facing charges after two people were stabbed late Monday night.

RCMP say on Monday, Aug. 28 around 11:30 p.m., police were called to the 300 block of Island Hwy. West in Parksville where they located three people, including a man and a woman who had been stabbed.

A suspect was arrested on scene, while all three were transported to hospital with various injuries with Oceanside RCMP Sgt. Shane Worth telling NanaimoNewsNOW they received several 911 calls as people heard screaming, while bystanders stepped in.

“Our understanding from the victims and from some witnesses were that some bystanders intervened in between the assault to stop the attack and the suspect as a result of that did receive some injuries, and that’s where we believe their injuries came from.”

The suspect and the victims are local members of the unhoused community.

Worth said one of the victims suffered a stab wound to the leg, while the other was injured on the neck and required a longer hospital stay before being released.

“Luckily the injuries were able to be treated with a short stay in hospital but the potential for serious injuries with a knife attack were there. Thankfully both victims did receive quick treatment and were released from hospital.”

Twenty-three-year-old Nicholas Morrison-Dault is facing one charge of aggravated assault and has been remanded into custody.

Morrison-Dault had no criminal record prior to this incident.

Worth said it’s not uncommon to see unhoused individuals gathering in the mostly commercial area where the stabbing occurred.

The investigation is ongoing as they determine a motive.
