NANAIMO — It’s been a whirlwind ride for Carter Cathers in 2023.

The Mid-Island Pirates outfielder has just completed the BCPBL season and played in two major tournaments.

Cathers is also set to appear at the Toronto Blue Jays Canadian Futures Showcase in mid September.

August was a very busy month for the 17-year-old who was chosen to go along with Team BC to Regina for the 2023 Baseball Canada Cup Championships.

“Result wise I did pretty good,” Cathers said. “I got put in a position where I had to play against the best people in Canada and I felt like I proved I belonged there.”

Cathers was the only Team BC player from Vancouver Island and helped his team to a silver medal after an 11-8 loss to Ontario in the final.

Within days of the tournament he was back with his Mid-Island Pirates teammates and heading to Fort McMurray for the National U18 Championship.

“It was my second time going to that tournament. We didn’t do as well as we did last year. Last year we finished third and this year we finished seventh.”

The Pirates ended up with a 2-3 record.

The most prestigious event of Cathers baseball year is still to come.

He’s one of 80 players picked from a tryout camp to join the Toronto Blue Jays Canadian Futures Showcase Sept. 19-23.

Cathers said the recent Canada Cup experience will help him when he goes to Toronto.

“It’s probably the biggest event I’ll ever have been to in my life. I’m looking forward to it. I’ve already been in situations where I’ve played against the best players in Canada so I’m confident I can do well.”

Heading into Grade 12 Cathers still has one more year to play with the Pirates.

Then he wants to move on to university program.

“I’m trying to continue my baseball and academics at another level. I’m trying to be the best player I can be in order to get there.”
