Regional survey to help form residential energy improvement financing program

NANAIMO — Online and phone surveys are underway on the mid Island to help design an incentive program to make homes on the mid Island more energy efficient.

The joint effort between the Regional District of Nanaimo and City of Nanaimo will help guide the design of a financing program to encourage greenhouse gas emission reduction efforts.

“Part of the study includes a short survey about homeowner needs, wants and barriers related to home energy efficiency upgrades. While some rebates are already in place, by identifying more financial options or other support homeowners may need, the City and RDN can help make these upgrades even more accessible,” the joint news release stated.

Homeowners can visit the City website, or the RDN’s to learn additional information and complete the online survey.

People may be contacted by Mainstreet Research directly by phone. No questions about personal identities, addresses or banking information will be asked.

Buildings account for 31 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions within Nanaimo city limits, with residential buildings accounting for approximately 42 per cent of those pollutants, according to the release.

Last September the City and RDN were awarded $175,000 from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to support a home energy financing study for the Nanaimo region.

The City of Nanaimo declared a climate emergency in 2019 and established aggressive greenhouse gas reduction targets of 50 to 58 per cent below 2010 levels.
