Aug 9, 2023 | 10:25 AM

UPDATE: Drive BC now anticipates Hwy. 4 at Cameron Lake to re-open on Wednesday, Aug. 9 at 5 p.m., several hours ahead of schedule.

EARLIER β€” Overnight rainfall has caused some additional headaches for area travelers.

Hwy. 4 at Cameron Lake was closed as a result of shower activity complicating ongoing work at Cameron Lake. The closure is expected to be in place all day Wednesday, Aug. 9.

The ministry of transportation and infrastructure stated in a tweet β€œan increased risk of debris fall due to the rain has the highway closed at Cameron Lake.”

The anticipated re-opening of the highway at Cameron Lake is after midnight on Thursday, Aug. 10.

A logging road detour route between Port Alberni and Lake Cowichan remains open.

MOTI estimates the detour route takes roughly four hours.

The latest information on the status of Hwy. 4 at Cameron Lake can be found here via Drive BC, while MOTI has details on the Cameron Bluffs Recovery Project, including information on anticipated travel delays at Cameron Lake here.

In early June a forest fire on the steep slopes above Hwy .4 above Cameron Lake temporarily closed the highway, which saw a restricted opening a little over two weeks later.

Meanwhile, early morning commuters heading southbound along Hwy. 19 between Nanoose Bay and Nanaimo were met with potholes through an ongoing road rehabilitation project.

Several large holes emerged in the outside, or slow, lane of the highway affecting multiple vehicles.

Crews from Mainroad Mid-Island cordoned off the affected area around 8 a.m. and directed vehicles into the inside, fast, lane of the highway.
