NANAIMO — A significant provincial tournament is hitting the greens.

The Nanaimo Lawn Bowling Club at Bowen Park are hosting the provincial senior women’s triples beginning Tuesday, Aug. 8 and running through Thursday, Aug. 10.

Club president Frances Tester told NanaimoNewsNOW teams will play three games each on Tuesday and Wednesday in a full round robin format.

“We have eight teams coming into the Nanaimo Lawn Bowling event, three teams coming over from the Mainland, the other fives teams are spread out between Courtenay, Parksville and Nanaimo.”

The tournament wraps Thursday with the gold and bronze medal games, with the winner of provincials qualifying for the senior triples national tournament in Edmonton.

Play gets underway at 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

Hosting the tournament is adding one more element to an already celebratory mood around the club with Tester saying it’s been five months of non-stop bowls this season.

“When we heard that [provincials] was up for grabs for the Island, we put an application in. One of the reasons why it was really important for us to get it this year is it’s out 100th anniversary. We’ve been celebrating through this season.”

A series of open house events have helped the club boost membership north of 150 people this year, with a final tournament on the schedule for the end of August.

Games at provincials are free to attend for the public, who are encouraged to come down, watch and learn more about the sport which Tester describes as “like curling” but with a target which can move.
