NANAIMO — The driver of a small vehicle hit along the Nanaimo Parkway late Wednesday night by an allegedly impaired motorist, has died.

Police report the 24-year-old driver of a Toyota Yaris died of their injuries overnight Thursday, July 20 after initially receiving care in hospital.

He and his vehicle were hit at speed by a green Dodge Caravan driven by a 59-year-old man travelling the wrong way on the Parkway, north of the Cedar Rd. overpass on Wednesday, July 19 just before 10 p.m.

At the time, RCMP said both drivers suffered life threatening injuries and were taken to hospital. The driver of the Caravan remains admitted at NRGH.

A police investigation is still on going, however no charges have been laid.

With the 24-year-old man dying as a result of the accident, officers could potentially lay impaired driving causing death charges in addition to a number of other driving offences.

Alcohol, among other factors, are believed to have contributed to the collision on behalf of van’s driver.

“The investigation continues and investigators are asking for motorists with dash-cam video of the collision or pre-driving video to contact the Nanaimo RCMP,” Res. Cst Gary O’Brien said in a statement.

The driver of the Caravan also reportedly tried to flee the scene but was arrested a short time later with help from Police Dog Services.
