NANAIMO — Deadline day has arrived to pay 2023 property taxes without being hit with a fine.

Municipal property taxes in the province are due by the end of day on Tuesday, July 4, including those within Nanaimo city limits, neighbouring municipalities and regional districts.

City of Nanaimo residential and commercial property owners can pay taxes at the Service and Resource Centre on Dunsmuir St. via a cheque, pay online through their bank or set up a monthly withdrawal plan with the City.

Penalties will begin to be applied to outstanding bills beginning Wednesday, July 5 with the City of Nanaimo applying a two per cent penalty. Another eight per cent penalty is applied if the balance is not paid by the end of August.

Tax bills are noticeably higher this year for many people in Nanaimo with taxes rising by 7.2 per cent in conjunction with increased property valuations having varying effects on property owners.

Home Owner Grants can be claimed via the province’s website here.

Under the Local Government Act, municipalities in the province are required to sell properties whose taxes have not been paid for three years.

A City of Nanaimo tax sale for delinquent properties takes place on the last Monday of every September.
