NANAIMO — For a second consecutive year a Nanaimo intersection maintained its hold of having the most motor vehicle crashes on Vancouver Island.

New ICBC data shows the Island Hwy., Hammond Bay Rd., Aulds Rd. intersection was the site of 61 crashes last year, which is a reduction of 15 collisions from 2021.

A red light and speed camera are in place at the intersection.

Two other Nanaimo intersections were on the top 10 collision list for Vancouver Island last year: Island Hwy. at Bowen Rd. (58 crashes) and Island Hwy. at Rutherford/Mostar Rds. (56 crashes).

The highest crash intersection in Lantzville last year was the Nanaimo Parkway at Aulds Rd. where 43 crashes were reported, 10 fewer than in 2021.

In Parksville, the highest crash intersection last year was at the Island Hwy., Alberni Hwy., and Morrison Ave. with 13 crashes.

About 10,600 crashes at Vancouver Island intersections were reported to ICBC last year, slightly above the five-year average.

Across the province, nearly 97,000 intersection crashes were reported in 2022, about nine thousand more than 2021, according to ICBC.

Fourteen people died in collisions at Vancouver Island intersections in 2021, however, data for 2022 is not yet available.
