NANAIMO — Several athletes from the Nanaimo Track and Field Club had top eight finishes at the BC High School Track and Club provincials on June 8-10.

NTFC spokesperson Wanda Urbanowicz said it’s one of the biggest meets student-athletes will ever attend.

“Nanaimo Track and Field did well and we had great representation from all the schools. The biggest group was from Nanaimo District Secondary and they had some great results.”

Tessa Bell is in Grade 8 at NDSS and posted a top four finish in three events.

She earned second place in the triple jump, third in high jump and fourth in long jump.

Bell also won a gold medal in pentathlon the week prior at the BC High School Combined Events Championships.

Fellow NDSS student Lydia Paris finished third in high jump and fifth in the 400-metre hurdles for senior girls.

John Barsby’s Niall O’Hara won third in the 800-metre race and fourth in the 1500-metre steeplechase.

Ava Gauthier had a fifth-place showing in the 3000-metre race, sixth in the 1500-metre and sixth in the 4×400-metre relay and Lucy Russell grabbed third in the pole vault and was also part of the sixth-place NDSS relay team.

Other notable performances include Haley Martin finishing fourth in the 400-metre hurdles and Serenna Drake taking sixth place in discus and shot put in the senior girls category.

Krescyn Moonsamy ran to a fifth-place finish in the senior boys 200-metre race.

In junior girls competition Annika McMinn was fourth in the hammer throw, Gavin Esleyer finished sixth in the junior boys 400 metre, and Danaea Brand took home seventh place in the Grade 8 girls 100 metre event.

Urbanowicz said several of the results from the BC High School event were also personal bests.

Many of these same athletes are preparing for the BC Track and Field Championship Jamboree in Nanaimo on July 7-9.

Results from the upcoming jamboree club championship will be key for those looking to make Team BC or qualify for national events later in the season.

Urbanowicz said hosting a meet like this will be a lot of work and requires many volunteers.

“We want to put on a good show because we are hosting it next year again and rumour has it we may be hosting BC High School’s. This is a good training ground for those who are new at managing meets.”
