NANAIMO — The Nanaimo Sports and Social Club is in the midst of a grass volleyball season with a 10 week session of California Kickball on the horizon.

Sports for adults with a focus on fun and meeting new people is the goal of the group which is enjoying a spike in popularity.

Co-founder Chuck Hocker said NSSC has had the most growth and the most amount of events since they started in 2018.

“We ran four seasons of dodgeball, three seasons of indoor volleyball, two seasons of outdoor grass volleyball, two seasons of futsal, California kickball, drop in soccer and we partnered with the Nanaimo Squash Club on some activities.

The demographic ranges from 19-55 with the majority of people between the ages of 25-45.

“We had over 1300 unique players play at least one activity with us this past season,” Hocker said. “At any given time there’s about 400 players active at any one time”.

The current grass volleyball season has an added social component thanks to a partnership with the Nanaimo Rugby Club.

With games at May Bennett Pioneer Park participants can use the rugby clubhouse after games.

The next offering is California Kickball starting on June 19.

Kickball is very popular but it’s only offered once a year for ten weeks.

“We’ve got 20 teams for kickball. The one thing that’s different about kickball is just due to field availability and it not being a sport that’s easy to play in colder temperatures we just run the one season of it. We run it in the summer and then we say goodbye to it for probably a few months too many.”

There is still room for free against to sign up and Hocker said they have one or two team spots still available.

A full list of activities and information about the club is available on the Nanaimo Sports and Social Club website and on social media through facebook and instagram.
