Telus announces nearly $12 million investment for Nanaimo

NANAIMO — A substantial infrastructure commitment by Telus for the Nanaimo market is part of a sizable province-wide commitment, the telecommunications giant announced.

A Tuesday, June 6 news release from the company outlined $11.7 million from an $18.5 billion “investment in infrastructure, operations and spectrum” across BC would be committed for Nanaimo between now and 2027.

As part of the investment, Nanaimo is receiving enhancements to the company’s fibre optic internet service.

“These investments are critical to providing Canadians with access to superior technology, connecting customers to the people, resources and information that make their lives better,” a Telus release noted.

Fibre optic technology, enabling significantly faster internet service, was first installed to the benefit of most of the Nanaimo area marketplace by Telus starting in 2019.

Ongoing fibre optic enhancements are taking place in Nanoose Bay, after Telus announced last fall some 600 homes would benefit from better and more reliable connections.

Meantime, more information is expected in the near future regarding a broad telecommunications strategy from the City of Nanaimo to better prepare for the pending introduction of evolving technologies, including 5G networks.

The telecommunications strategy is expected to produce clarity on a significant cellular deadzone in Nanaimo’s Hammond Bay area.
