BC Wildfire Service asks the public to be vigilant this long weekend

May 20, 2023 | 11:30 AM

KAMLOOPS — The May long-weekend marks the unofficial start to summertime for many residents throughout the province.

That means folks will be packing up the family and heading out into provincial parks or the back-country for some recreation.

After several days of the warm dry weather we’ve experienced in the Interior, the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) wants everyone who enjoys a campfire this weekend, to ensure they do so safely.

“If you’re planning to enjoy the outdoors this weekend, we just want to remind everyone to be vigilant, and be careful when you’re in the backcountry,” Melanie Bibeau, BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) Information Officer suggests. “Ensure that if you have a campfire, you have adequate fire suppression on site, that you have water and a hand tool, and that you ensure your ashes are cool to the touch before you vacate the area.”

While there’s no official start to wildfire season, the Fire Danger Rating was rated as low to high across southern B.C. as of Friday (May 19) afternoon.

Even though there are some cooler temperatures in the forecast for later in the weekend, the BCWS asks everyone to keep their eyes peeled and report any wildfires they come across.

“If you do happen to see a wildfire, we just want to encourage people to use our *5555 line or you can use the BC Wildfire Mobile app,” Bibeau says. “The app also has a feature that allows you to input a photo of the wildfire, so that even if you are unsure of the exact location you are in, it can be geo-referenced to provide a better reference to our operations teams, as well.”
