‘Adverse weather conditions’ forcing Nanaimo-Vancouver sailing cancellations

NANAIMO — Ferry travel is being disrupted as a result of a storm moving in.

High winds throughout Nanaimo on Thursday, April 20 are seeing the cancellation of crossings between Nanaimo’s Duke Point and Tsawwassen terminals.

BC Ferries said the 3:15 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. sailings from both terminals have been cancelled.

Earlier today, they cancelled the 10:15 a.m. sailings from both terminals, as well as the 12:45 p.m. scheduled departures.

“We are closely monitoring the weather and should conditions not improve, additional sailings are at risk of cancellation or delay,” a service notice from BC Ferries read.

To date, service between Departure Bay in Nanaimo and Horseshoe Bay is sailing as scheduled.

Environment Canada has not issued any weather warnings linked to the storm however the forecast is calling for winds gusting to 50 kilometres per hour near the Strait of Georgia Thursday afternoon.

Winds are expected to ease Wednesday evening.
