Nanaimo athletes earn podium finishes at BC Winter Games

NANAIMO — A host of hardware has returned to the central Island following the BC Winter Games in Vernon.

Around 30 athletes representing communities between Ladysmith and Qualicum Beach were among those who competed at the three-day event beginning Friday, March 24.

In total, some 1,300 athletes and coaches from across B.C. took part at the event.

“Whether it’s the volunteers, businesses or the people that came out to watch, we just want to thank the entire community for all the support because, really, it was everybody who pulled this off,” Nicky Dunlop, BC Winter Games society president said on Sunday.

Local athletes brought home two gold, five silver and four bronze medals from competitions in an array of sports:

Nanaimo

  • Tessa Bell: Gold (K1 Dual Slalom Team Mixed – Alpine Skiing)
  • Kipling Szasz: Silver (Under 63 kilogram women – Judo)
  • Ezekiel Moes: Silver (Under 55 kilogram men – Judo)
  • Sayjah Vieaux: Silver (Under 52 kilogram women – Judo)
  • Tegan Havas: Silver (Team Kata girls – Karate) & Bronze (Kata Intermediate girls – Karate)
  • Clare Boulding: Bronze (Under 52 kilogram women – Judo)
  • Caleb Bellaku: Bronze (Team CCP7 & CCP8 – Artistic Gymnastics)

Lantzville

  • John Kruger: Gold (Under 66 kilogram men – Judo)

Nanoose Bay

  • Damion Cathrine: Silver (Kumite Intermediate boys 156 centimetres – Karate) & Bronze (Team Kata boys – Karate)

The event was officially called the 2022 BC Winter Games as it was originally set for February 2022, but was postponed due to COVID-19 and other factors like wildfires and floods.

Fraser River (Zone 4) won the most medals with 99 including 35 gold. Van. Island-Central Coast (Zone 6) wrapped the event in fifth place with seven gold, 12 silver and 15 bronze medals.
