NANAIMO — A group of 16 athletes with Nanaimo Gymnastics and Flipside Gymnastics attended BC high school provincials March 9-11.

Nanaimo Gymnastics School coach Louise Demers said the Grade 8-12 students represented three Nanaimo high schools in Dover Bay, NDSS and John Barsby.

“We had great trials and most of our high school athletes qualified for provincials. This past weekend they were ready, they were excited and they showed well.”

There were five skill levels at the competition held in North Vancouver with level one for beginner athletes with levels three, four and five the more advanced.

Adah Godley from John Barsby finished seventh all around in level four at provincials with gold on vault plus twelfth on bars, eighteenth on beam and fourth on floor.

In the level three category Dover Bay students Tabitha Carson and Isabelle Servais placed second and third all around.

Carson earned fourteenth on vault, bronze on bars, seventh on beam and gold on floor to win silver.

Servais captured eleventh on vault, silver on bars, bronze on beam and fifteenth on floor to grab bronze.

Demers was particulary impressed with Carson’s performance.

“Tabitha scored in the high nines on three events. The one that stands is out is on beam where she scored a 9.425 and she had a fall in that routine so had she not fallen she would have gotten a 9.925 That’s a pretty fantastic score and she was over the moon about that.”

Nanaimo athletes also did well in level two highlighted by Alice Doniol-Valcroze with a silver all around and Pattyra Pomsinsub earning bronze all around.

Doniol-Valcroze had her best results on bars with a silver and beam with a bronze while Pomsinsub was fourth on beam and had a silver on floor.

Both are students at Nanaimo District Secondary School and were part of a group of five who came in second in the level two team competition.

For the athletes who don’t compete at the club level the BC high school championships are the pinnacle of their season.

At the club level there are some important events coming up.

Demers said their are three important weekends on the horizon for the top club competitors.

The Twisters Invitational March 16-19 in Abbotsford serves as trials for trials for the western Canadian championships, then there’s the BC Winter Games in Vernon March 23-26 and finally the provincial championships March 31 to Apr. 2 in North Surrey.
