Tardy Qualicum Beach senior caught going double posted school zone speed limit

QUALICUM BEACH — A flimsy excuse for speeding didn’t help a local senior escape a hefty fine.

Oceanside Mounties conducting traffic enforcement on Village Way, outside of Kwalikum Secondary School, caught Mercedes-Benz vehicle going 108 kilometres per hour through the 50 kilometre per hour school zone around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7.

Behind the wheel was an 83-year-old man who said he was running late.

“The driver indicated they were trying to get to an appointment,” Sgt. Shane Worth told NanamoNewsNOW. “So, 58 kilometres per hour over the limit in a school zone because you’re rushing to get to an appointment is not safe, it’s not appropriate.”

The vehicle was quickly pulled over with the driver issued a $368 ticket for excessive speed. Police also impounded the senior’s car for seven days.

Worth added points could come off the driver’s license from ICBC as a result of the incident.

The stretch of Village Way is one Oceanside RCMP keep a close eye on through the year, particularly when class is in session.

Two schools are on one of the main links between Hwy. 19A and the town centre.

“We do spend some time enforcing the speed limit around that particular high school, however our officers spend time in every school zone within our detachment area to remind motorists that there is a speed limit enforced there and it is a school zone,” Worth said.

Fines for speeding in B.C. range from $138 to $483 depending on the type of offence.

A seven day vehicle impoundment is standard for cars going 40 kilometres per hour or more over the posted speed limit.

Longer confiscations are available to police for repeat offenders.
