NANAIMO — The Clippers and Kings played back to back games at Frank Crane Arena and Nanaimo rebounded from a loss with a 6-3 victory on Jan. 28.

Surprise starter Shane Shelest was strong in the first period stopping all 16 shots he faced.

His performance allowed Nanaimo’s offence to get going with tallies by Brody Waters and Grant Babcock in the opening 20 minutes.

The Kings came out strong in the second with two straight goals from Adam Mendelson to knot the game at 2-2.

Willyam Gendron vaulted the Clippers back in front with a goal scored four on four half way through the middle frame.

A major penalty to the Kings Alexi Van Houtte-Cachero gave Nanaimo an extended power and Kai Daniells cashed in to put the home team up 4-2 heading in to the intermission.

Jeremie Payant put the Clippers up 5-2 in the third period, while Ryder Ringor gave Powell River a late spark with a 5-3 marker with eight minutes to play.

An empty net goal by Charles Tardif locked down Nanaimo’s 28th victory of the season.

The final shots were 38-25 for the Kings with Nanaimo going 1/3 on the power play and 2/2 killing penalties.

Payant led all scorers with a goal and two assists on the night.

Nanaimo leads the season series 4-2, and in the process became the first home team to win a head to head game.

The Clippers have a light week upcoming with a single road game in Cowichan Valley on Feb. 3.
