Nanaimo grocery store robbed at knifepoint

Jan 27, 2023 | 3:09 PM

NANAIMO — A local grocery store has been targeted by thieves.

Local Mounties report a man entered Superette Foods at the corner of Albert St. and Milton St. on Thursday, Jan. 26 around 5:40 p.m. while wearing a mask and brandishing a knife.

The attacker demanded cash from staff, who complied with the request by giving him an undisclosed amount of money.

Police say the man then ran away down Prideaux St. towards the Nicol St. area.

Immediate searches of the surrounding area failed to turn up anyone matching the description given to officers.

Staff at the store on Friday, Jan. 27 declined to speak with NanaimoNewsNOW, however a social media post from the store Thursday night acknowledged the incident and that nobody was injured.

Store security footage given to police showed the man approaching the store without his mask on.

He’s described as being in his mid-30’s, standing 5’10” and weighing around 175 pounds. He had heavy stubble and was wearing a dark hoodie and gloves.

Anyone with information on the incident, or the suspect identified, is asked to contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345, quoting file number 2023-3003.

Superette Foods has dealt with a number of robberies in recent history, including an early September incident which also occurred during the early evening hours.

Police at the time were confident they knew the suspect and were following up on leads.
