NANAIMO — The Clippers have been led from day one by their veterans, but the team wouldn’t be in first place without the growth of their less experienced players.

Ben Brant scored his first goal as a Clipper in Nanaimo’s most recent win over the Langley Rivermen.

Brant said he wants to make the most of his opportunity to play in the BCHL with the Clippers.

“It’s unbelievable and I’m super excited to be be here. I’m thankful for all my teammates and the coaching staff here.”

He’s noticed his play has improved with more confidence after making the transition from Junior B with the Victoria Cougars last year to Junior A in Nanaimo.

“It was hard for me at the start of the year being a fourth line guy who doesn’t touch the puck very much. Now my line is working the puck down low in the offensive zone and getting more confidence as we play.”

On the defensive side Matt Lahey has been getting a lot of on the job training.

The youngest Clipper, at 16-years-old, played two games as a BCHL affiliate with Cowichan Valley last season but he’s blossomed in Nanaimo making 20 appearances so far.

“It’s been a great learning curve and I’m excited to get more opportunities. I’m still figuring things out day by day but it feels like a big step I’ve taken since September.”

Like Brant, Lahey has seen his confidence grow during the five month BCHL season.

He’s also watched his fundamentals improve as well.

“I feel like my speed has come a long way and quicker reactions. I’m able to scan plays to see what’s the best option for me.”

At the All-Star break Brant, Lahey and the rest of the Clippers are in first place in the Coastal Division and the club is on a three game winning streak.

Nanaimo will resume the regular season schedule on Jan. 27 with a home date against the Powell River Kings.

CLIP NOTES:

Head coach Colin Birkas, top scorer Kai Daniells league leading defenceman scorer Ethan Mistry will represent the Clippers at the BCHL All-Star Game and Top Prospects Game in Penticton Jan. 20-22.

Willyam Gendron has put together a solid run of play with 11 points in a seven game point streak.

The Clippers are in a quiet part of their schedule with 11 days off for the All-Star break. Nanaimo also only plays three hockey games in a 24 day span from Jan. 16 to Feb 9.
