PORT ALBERNI — Travelers to and from Vancouver Island’s west coast can enjoy unrestricted commutes for the next few days.

On Thursday, Dec. 29 a Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) news release outlined unobstructed two-way traffic would be in effect until Monday, Jan 2, as crews shut down for a brief holiday.

“Work will continue in the new year with single-lane alternating traffic at all times until Thursday, Jan. 12, with delays as long as 30 minutes. Starting Friday, Jan. 13, there will be single-lane alternating traffic from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m., opening to two-way traffic at the end of each workday,” the MOTI release stated.

The province expects the long overdue construction project of enhancing the 1.5 kilometre stretch of highway east of Tofino will be complete in spring 2023, nearly three years behind schedule.

In addition to straightening and flattening the road, safety features to be added include a final rock mesh attachment and safety railing, draining work, final paving and pavement markings, according to MOTI.

A new rest area with washroom facilities will be accessible for all vehicle types, MOTI stated.

Numerous setbacks included large amounts of boulders falling from the cliff nearly three years ago, leading to a temporary bridge being installed.

Construction cost estimates climbed well beyond $50 million, up from the original projection of $38 million.
