LAKE COWICHAN — Two people from Ladysmith accused of an illegal Christmas shopping spree in the Cowichan Valley were arrested.

Lake Cowichan RCMP reported a man and woman were taken into custody for allegedly breaking into a recreational property and stealing items from the North Shore Rd. address on Friday, Dec. 23.

The incident west of Lake Cowichan was captured on surveillance video and called into police.

In a news release, the BC RCMP stated a suspicious vehicle was spotted by police in the area and stopped.

The male driver got out and ran off, while the female suspect was arrested on scene.

“Police pursed the male suspect into the wooded, snow filled area with the assistance of the Police Dog Services. Officers searched for the suspect for approximately two hours before locating him and placing him under arrest,” stated BC RCMP Cpl. Alex Bérubé.

He said the 36-year-old male suspect was taken to hospital due to exposure to the cold elements, then transported to the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP detachment.

Both suspects have been released pending future court appearances.

Criminal charges of break and enter are being considered against the pair, whose names can’t be released since they haven’t been formally charged.
