NANAIMO — Moderate damage but a heavy response to a fire in the city’s south end.

An enclosed deck area above AC Taxi’s building at 835 Old Victoria Rd. caught fire around 6:20 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 13.

Capt. Geoff Whiting with Nanaimo Fire Rescue said four engines responded to the scene and were quick to act.

“When they arrived there were flames showing on a second floor deck to the building. They were able to knock that down quickly.”

No-one was on scene at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

Employees of AC Taxi were working Tuesday morning after the fire, with Nanaimo Fire Rescue saying the building was still habitable.

“(Firefighters) made entry to the building to check for any extension to the interior,” Whiting added. “They did find the fire was contained to the deck structure, so it didn’t progress inside. Certainly if any more time, if it hadn’t been noticed there would have been risk to it extending to the rest of the building.”

Fire inspectors are on scene Tuesday to determine how the fire started.

A member of the AC Taxi Board of Director’s told NanaimoNewsNOW the balcony was used as a smoking area, while the space immediately inside is the company’s dispatch centre.

He said they were “very lucky” to not have any fire spread inside, but wasn’t able to say what the cause of the fire was.
