Mount Washingon Alpine Resort stages partial opening

Dec 9, 2022 | 5:29 AM

COURTENAY — Winter season launches on Friday, Dec 9 at Mount Washington Alpine Resort (MWAR).

The resort announced a limited opening of its beginner terrain involving all five magic carpet lift operations, along with one lane of the tube park between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Weather permitting, the Whiskey Jack chair will open on Saturday, Dec. 10.

Additional chair lifts and terrain in the higher elevation sections of the resort will open as additional snow falls.

Limited restaurants will be available at the outset, while all retail shops, services, rentals and lessons will be open.

Night skiing at the resort, alloted between 3:30 p.m. and 9 p.m., is scheduled to be offered starting Dec. 16.

In response to prolonged drought conditions in the summer and fall seasons, MWAR implemented numerous restrictions to conserve water.

Water refill stations are shut off for now, disposable plates and cutlery are in use and portable toilets have been added to the resort.

Resort residents are asked to reduce water consumption as much as possible.

MWAR is a year-round attraction located in the northern portion of the Comox Valley, featuring five chairlifts serving more than 1,700 acres of alpine terrain.

The resort’s winter season offering also includes cross-country and snowshoeing trails.
