NANAIMO — A tall, dark plume of smoke was visible through a considerable section of the city’s north end from a fire.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue crews were called to the yard of GFL Environmental in the 4400 block of Boban Dr., just after 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4.

Capt. Dan Multari told NanaimoNewsNOW on scene it was hard to tell where the fire started, which involved multiple structures.

“We arrived on scene to find a fully involved 15 x 30 foot shed…next to that was a heavily damaged and smoking ATCO trailer. There appeared to be no extension into the building, just some light smoke and we were able to knock that down fairly quickly.”

Both the shed and trailer were completely destroyed.

The adjacent warehouse sustained damage to its outside and extremely minor damage to interior insulation.

No injures were reported, however paramedics from BC Emergency Health Services were on scene.

Three engines and one truck from Nanaimo Fire Rescue attended, totalling approximately 18 firefighters, according to Multari.

Firefighters had to cut a lock on the property’s gate in order to get access to the site.

A cause will be determined in the days to come.

“The inspection division, fire loss prevention division from Nanaimo Fire Rescue will be on scene and in contact with the (owner) probably first thing tomorrow morning,” Multari added.

Power was shut off, first by Nanaimo Fire Rescue, then more comprehensively by BC Hydro once on site.

Services will be restored once safety checks are completed.
