‘Lucky and quite timely:’ Oceanside Mountie finds man lying on Hwy. 19A after being hit by car

PARKSVILLE — A local man remains in hospital in critical condition following a late night accident.

The 48-year-old pedestrian was found seriously injured and lying on Hwy. 19A, near Plummer Rd. around 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 29 during the large snow storm event.

Sgt. Shane Worth with Oceanside RCMP said the man was found by an officer on patrol and was rushed to hospital. No vehicles were on scene when police arrived.

“Police received a call from somebody who advised us they may have hit someone in the area we were at. They did the right thing, gave us a call and we were able to connect with that person.,” Worth said.

Worth said the man had been laying on the road maybe for a matter of minutes, and the officer happening upon him was “lucky and quite timely”.

Temperatures in the area were below freezing at the time with considerable blowing snow.

Worth noted the driver is cooperating with police and investigators have ruled out alcohol and drugs as contributing factors. Police have seized the driver’s vehicle as part of their investigation.

RCMP collision reconstructionists attended the scene Tuesday night, then against for around an hour late Wednesday morning to gather more information.

An investigation into the cause of the incident continues.

“It’s too early in the investigation to say what, if any, charges will be laid. We’re just trying to put the pieces together because we’re not able to speak to the critically injured male at this time.”

Anyone who witnesses the crash, or saw the man walking along the highway prior to the crash and has information or dash cam video, is asked to contact Oceanside RCMP at 250 248 6111, quoting file number 2022-11749.
