Hewitt notches late game winner in Clippers 4-2 win in Cowichan

NANAIMO — After a first period full of offense the Clippers and Capitals settled into a defensive game in the final 40 minutes of Nanaimo’s 4-2 win in Cowichan Valley.

Both teams were able to create havoc in the attacking zone in an opening frame that ended 2-2.

Luke Lavery and Cole Melady scored for the Capitals and Jeremie Payant on the power play and Brody Waters responded for the Clippers.

Nanaimo’s Aidan Campbell and Cowichan Valley’s McCoy Bidewell slammed the door in the second period, setting up a winner take all final frame.

With the prospect of overtime looming Jake Hewitt banged in a game winner with three minutes remaining and then Charles Tardif added a late empty net goal to seal the victory.

The final shots finished 44-38 for the Clippers while Nanaimo went 1/3 on the man advantage and 2/2 killing penalties.

Hewitt was named the game’s first star while Lavery took second star honours and Campbell was third star.

Nanaimo improved to 4-0 against the Capitals while ending a a season high five game road stretch 4-1.

On Friday Dec. 2 the Clippers return home to battle the Chilliwack Chiefs, they’ll host Merritt the day after.

***The online scoresheet from the Nov. 27 game was changed twice indicating a potential Cowichan forfeit. As of Nov. 28 Nanaimo is credited with a 4-0 win on the BCHL website.
