Canada falls to Belgium in FIFA World Cup opener
AR-RAYYAN, QATAR — Canada are still awaiting their first ever World Cup goal, but proved they belong amongst the world’s best.
Belgium, 2nd in the FIFA rankings, held on for a 1-0 win over Canada on Wednesday, Nov. 23 and top Group F after the first round of matches.
Canada started strong and carried a majority of the play, earning a penalty in the 10th minute after the video assistant referee (VAR) confirmed a handball in the penalty area from Belgium’s Yannick Carrasco.
Alphonso Davies’ attempt to the bottom left was stopped by the goalkeeper with Canada unable to capitalize on the rebound.
