Clippers survive power play onslaught to beat Chilliwack 3-2

NANAIMO — The Clippers fought through nine opposition power plays and 45 shots against to stun the Chilliwack Chiefs 3-2.

Nanaimo earned a 1-0 lead on a Jake Hewitt rebound goal in the first seven minutes of the game.

The Chiefs opened the second period with a pair of power play goals by Abram Wiebe and Mason Kesselring.

Kesselring’s tally came on an extended five on three for Chilliwack.

The Clippers were able to counter with Lukas Klemm’s first goal of the season and Nick Sajevic’s third before the end of the middle frame.

The power plays were eight to one in favour of the Chiefs in the first 40 minutes of the night, including a major penalty for a blow to the head assessed to Skyler Cameron.

Aidan Campbell was Nanaimo’s best player from start to finish making 17 saves in the first period and 13 in both the second and the third.

Neither team scored in the final frame as the shots finished 45-27 for Chilliwack.

The final power play numbers saw Nanaimo go 0/5 and the Chiefs finish 2/9.

Nanaimo takes a 16-3 record into their next game in Surrey on Nov. 20.

The Eagles are four points behind the Clippers for first place in the Coastal Division standings.
