NANAIMO — Adverse weather conditions wiped out the Departure Bay-Horseshoe Bay route on Monday, Nov. 7.

BC Ferries cancelled multiple early day sailings aboard the Queen of Cowichan and Queen of Oak Bay between the two terminals, and announced near noon the entire day’s schedule had been scrapped.

“The safety of our passengers and crew is of primary importance to us, and we will keep you informed as more information becomes available,” a BC Ferries service notice read. “We apologize for any inconvenience as a result of these sailing cancellations.”

Environment Canada issued a strong wind warning for boats on Monday.

Winds are expected to reach upwards of 35 kilometres per hour in the afternoon, increasing to 45 kilometres per hour early in the evening.

Sailings between Duke Point in Nanaimo and Tsawwassen are unaffected however both the 12:45 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. sailings from the Island are full.

The schedule between the two terminals has been running around 10 minutes behind since the early morning.

Ticket agents are currently booking for the 5:45 p.m. sailing from Nanaimo with roughly 35 per cent space available as of 11:20 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 7.

More information on current conditions for BC Ferries travel is available on their website.
