Cat thrown from moving car in Nanaimo survives & thrives in new fur-ever home

NANAIMO — A disgusting and despicable act has resulted in a happy ending for a kitty who deserved better.

Merlot, a 16-year-old cat, was rushed to the Nanaimo and District SPCA branch on Aug. 23 after someone saw him tossed out of a moving car.

The unthinkable act somehow didn’t result in any injuries to the senior citizen, as branch manager Bonnie Pequin said he was checked over thoroughly after the incident.

“He did however, have dental disease and crusts and scabs along his back and head. A senior bloodwork panel was done and it showed that Merlot had allergies so he was put on a hypoallergenic diet and he was also administered flea control.”

After some long overdue love, care and attention at the facility, Merlot was adopted out in mid-October to a woman named Lana, who had made a habit of taking in cats living their twilight years.

She was searching for a friend for Merlin, a senior boy who lost his bonded companion, Luke, to kidney disease in August.

“Merlin missed Luke, so I wanted to get him a companion, so I went back to the BC SPCA’s website and I found Merlot,” Lana said.

Her self-described “kitty retirement” home in North Vancouver is now home to the older gentlemen, enjoying each other’s and Lana’s company.

She said despite their years of experience they still have an immense amount of love to give.

“Merlin and Merlot both have a little kitten energy in them. Merlin still gets up and rips around the house at three am. They both like to play with string and laser toys and they love to cuddle. Luke was chasing toys up until his last two weeks.”

Adoption fees for senior animals, over 8 years old, at the Nanaimo branch are $75 for cats and $160 for dogs.
