Clippers go down 6-4 to Kings in home opener

NANAIMO — The Clippers home opener went back and forth but ended with the visiting Powell River Kings grabbing a 6-4 win.

Powell River led 2-1 after the first period, Nanaimo was up 3-2 through 40 minutes but the Kings scored four goals to the Clippers one in the third to snap a 13 game head to head losing streak.

Nanaimo outshot Powell River 45-26 but the Kings capitalized on situational plays.

They scored two power play goals and two four on four goals in the contest.

The Clippers were led by Jake Hewitt with three assists, while the Kings had two goals and a helper from Marcus Dashevsky and a pair of goals by Nic Porchetta.

Netminder Liam Vanderkooi was the first star with 41 saves with Dashevsky and Hewitt rounding out the three stars.

Nanaimo went 1/4 on the power play and 2/4 on the penalty kill.

The loss was the Clippers first against the Kings since January of 2020.

Their next head to head game is Nov. 25 in Powell River.

The Clippers weekend continues with a home game against the Victoria Grizzlies on Oct. 1 at 7 p.m.
