BC Ferries pilot project looking at increased pet access on board

NANAIMO — A new pilot project is aiming to make Fido’s ferry travel a little more comfortable.

BC Ferries is running the three-month initiative on crossings between Earls Cove and Saltery Bay on the Sunshine Coast, allowing travellers to bring their dogs and cats to the upper, outside passenger decks.

Pets remain limited to the vehicle decks on other ships in the BC Ferries fleet for now, however results of the pilot project will determine how the company proceeds.

“Dogs must keep their owners on a leash at all times and cats must be in a travel carrier while on the outer decks,” a release from BC Ferries noted. “Access to the area will be via a designated stairwell, with restricted elevator entry for those with accessibility needs.”
