NANAIMO — A head-on collision injured two people, including serious injuries to a woman immobilized in her vehicle.

The incident happened at the intersection of Hammond Bay Rd. at Rutherford Rd. on Friday, Sept. 23 at about 9 a.m. where two compact SUV’s collided.

Capt. Tom Krall with Nanaimo Fire Rescue (NFR) said the crash involved two drivers, who were the lone occupants of their respective vehicles.

One man was taken to hospital, while Krall said a woman driving the other vehicle was stuck inside and had to be extracted free by NFR members.

“We’re not sure of the nature of those injuries, but she’s seriously injured,” Krall told NanaimoNewsNOW.

A neck brace was placed on her following the crash, while a spine board was at the scene.

Both motorists were conscious on scene, with the male driver able to walk away on his own power before being transported to Nanaimo hospital.

The incident caused significant traffic disruptions with numerous emergency responders on scene.

It’s unclear what led to the crash.

It appeared the female driver was heading west on Hammond Bay Rd. and attempting to turn left up Rutherford Rd.

The other motorist appeared to be travelling eastbound on Hammond Bay Rd.

“You see it all the time…speed, there’s too much speed,” he said.

ICBC data showed 14 motor vehicle collisions occurred at the Hammond Bay/Rutherford Rd. intersection last year and 50 crashes between 2017 and 2021.
