Campaigning portion of 2022 civic election well underway

BRITISH COLUMBIA — The campaign period for the October civic election is now in progress.

Andrews Watson with Elections B.C. said that means that expense limits are now in effect.

“For candidates and third-party advertising sponsors. So every jurisdiction in the province has an expense limit for mayoral candidates, for council candidates, which limits the amount of money they can spend on their campaign during that campaign period.”

He said any election advertisers must register with Elections B.C. and file a campaign financing disclosure statement after the October 15th vote showing the money they raised and the money that was spent on their campaign.

“All elections advertisers need to… include an authorization statement on their advertisements so that voters know who is sponsoring the ad and how to contact them.”

He said there are some exceptions to what counts as election advertising, including social media coverage and free social media posts.

Watson said the definition of advertising has now been broadened to include issue-based ads as well.

“Election advertising includes advertisements that promote or oppose a candidate directly or indirectly, and it also includes issues-based ads, so those are election ads that speak to an issue in the election that’s associated with a candidate or an electoral organization.”

The 2022 B.C. municipal election takes place on October 15.
