Un-official candidate list confirmed ahead of 2022 Municipal Election

NANAIMO — The field is all but set for Mayor, City Councillor, RDN Director and School Board Trustee races across the Central Island.

Candidates intending to seek election in the Oct. 15 vote were required to register by 4 p.m. on Friday, Sep. 9. There is a one-week grace period for anyone who has since changed their mind, so the candidates list remains un-official until 4 p.m. on Friday, Sep.16.

Below is a list of those running for elected office in the municipalities of Nanaimo, Lantzville, Parksville and Qualicum Beach, along with RDN Directors and trustees for both SD68 and SD69.

NanaimoNewsNOW has profiled four of the five candidates running for Mayor in Nanaimo and will feature the two candidates competing for Parksville’s top elected position on Saturday, Sep. 10 and Sunday, Sep. 11.

City of Nanaimo
Leonard Krog will look for re-election against a field of four challengers which is two more than when he won in 2018. Agnes Provost, Brunie Brunie, Tasha Brown.

Twenty-nine candidates will look to fill the eight Council seats available. It’s a smaller field than the 40 which ran in 2018 and features seven incumbents hoping to return. The list includes (incumbents denoted by [i]):

Jeff Annesley, Sheryl Armstrong [i], Ken Bennett, Don Bonner [i], Tyler Brown [i], Paul Chapman, Hilary Eastmure, Ben Geselbracht [i], Nick Greer, Derek Hanna, Mike Hartlaub, Erin Hemmens [i], Gary Korpan, Jay Krishan, Shirley Lambrecht, Peter Lee, Zeni Maartman [i], Alan Macdonald, Paul Manly, Janice Perrino, Frank Pluta, Peter Poole, Michael Ribicic, Norm Smith, Robb Squire, Viraat Thammanna, Ian Thorpe [i], Corey Trinkwon, David Wang.

District of Lantzville
Incumbent Mayor Mark Swain faces one challenger for the role, with local businessman Stan Pottie the other name on the ballot. Both ran in 2018 in a three-person race with Swain winning 57.97 per cent of the vote to Pottie’s 4.24 per cent.

Only one of Lantzville’s four incumbent councillors is running in this election, with seven total candidates. It’s a smaller candidate turnout than in 2018 where 10 people ran. The list for 2022 includes (incumbents denoted by [i]):

John Dunn, Joan Jones, Jonathan Lerner, Shandra Mayes, Rachelle Mundell, Ian Savage [i], Karl Wiese.

City of Parksville
Ed Mayne’s tenure as Mayor will be challenged by a familiar face. Councillor Doug O’Brien is the only person running against Mayne who earned 58.43 per cent of the vote in a three-person contest in 2018. O’Brien was the fourth highest vote getter among councillors.

Fifteen candidates will look to fill six councillor seats at City Hall which is more than the 11 which ran in 2018. Three incumbents, not including O’Brien, are running for re-election. The list includes (incumbents denoted by [i]):

Karin Badel, Frank Bailey, Mary Beil, Lucky Butterworth, Adam Fras [i], Amit Gaur, Joel Grenz, Mike Kelly, Jeet Mann, Sylvia Martin, Paula Miles, Teresa Patterson [i], Michael Pedersen, Marilyn Wilson [i], Sean Wood.

Town of Qualicum Beach
Much the same as Parksville, the incumbent Mayor Brian Wiese will be challenged by someone he’s very familiar with. Councillor Teunis Westbroek will be on the ballot along side him. Wiese beat out Anne Skipsey, who later returned as a councillor in a by-election, with 56.11 per cent of the vote. Westbroek finished third in the councillor race.

Three incumbents will return to the ballot in a field of 10 candidates. Some have prior election experience in votes before 2018. The list includes (incumbents denoted by [i]):

Stanley Beech, Robert Filmer [i], Scott Harrison [i], Peter Kent, Doreen MacKay-Dunn, John Phillips, Anne Skipsey [i], Petronella Vander Valk, Dave Willie, Jean Young.

Regional District of Nanaimo
A handful of races for electoral area directors will not need a vote. Vanessa Craig (Electoral Area B- Gabriola & Surrounding Islands), Bob Rogers (Electoral Area E – Nanoose) and Stuart McLean (Electoral Area H – Shaw Hill, Deep Bay, Bowser) are all incumbents running unopposed.

The other races are as follows (incumbents denoted by [i]):

• Electoral Area A (South Wellington, Cassidy, Cedar): Carl Delcourt, Kate Poirier, Jessica Stanley, Keith Wilson [i]
• Electoral Area C (Extension, East Wellington, Pleasant Valley): Mark MacDonald, Lauren Melanson, Charles Pinker [i], Dean Toma, Susan Toth
• Electoral Area F (Coombs, Hilliers, Errington): Kevin Goldfuss, Leanne Salter [i]
• Electoral Area G (Dashwood, Englishman River, French Creek): Doug Kitts, Lehann Wallace [i]

School District 68 (Nanaimo-Ladysmith)
Thirteen candidates are on the ballot for School Board trustee for Nanaimo-Ladysmith Public Schools, looking to fill nine spots on the board. Five of the candidates are incumbents, the list includes (incumbents denoted by [i]):

Naomi Bailey [i], Tania Brzovic [i], Andrew Gasson, Greg Keller [i], Leanne Lee, Faith Mapayi, Charlene McKay [i], Chantelle Morvay, Leana Pellegrin, Bill Robinson [i], Mark Robinson, Tom Rokeby, Tanner Scott.

School District 69 (Qualicum)
Five positions must be filled on the Qualicum School District board of trustees, with seven candidates contesting the race. The list includes (incumbents denoted by [i]):

Eve Flynn [i], Philip Perry, Julie Austin [i], Carol Kellog, Garry Pendergast, Roberta Young [i], Barry Kurland [i].
