NANAIMO — Local and provincial fire crews have responded quickly to reports of a small brush fire south of the city.

The fire, estimated to be a third of a hectare in size was spotted late Thursday, Sep. 8 on the south side of the Nanaimo River.

Access for crews was along Nanaimo River Rd., between South Forks Rd. and White Rapids Rd.

“We had multiple reports coming in around 3 o’clock this afternoon. We already have seven firefighters and two helicopters on scene,” Julia Caranci, fire information officer with the Coastal Fire Centre told NanaimoNewsNOW.

No structures are near the site of the fire and crews had a quick jump on flames.

Two water bombing helicopters were on scene dousing the fire from above.

Multiple local fire departments were on scene in conjunction with Coastal Fire Centre staff.

The Coastal Fire Centre stated on Friday, Sept. 9 that the fire is under control, while an initial attack crew continues patrolling the area and shoveling over hot spots.

The small fire is suspected to be human caused.
