NANAIMO — A dozen temporary homes are targeted toward Snuneymuxw First Nation members experiencing homelessness.

A partnership between the City of Nanaimo and SFN includes four living spaces already delivered to SFN land in Cedar, which are expected to house people this month, a City news release stated.

The remaining eight portable units are anticipated to be completed in early 2023.

The portable homes include a studio style bedroom, mini kitchen and separate shower and washroom.

Three of the units are designed to be fully accessible for those with physical disabilities.

Health and wellness supports are included with the temporary housing, which will see the servicing costs shared between the City and SFN.

Capital costs for the project are covered by a $2.5 million provincial grant supplied to municipalities to combat issues related to homelessness.

Temporary housing, security and clean-up initiatives accounted for most of the provincial grant committed for Nanaimo.
