Heat warning issued for Nanaimo & Oceanside

NANAIMO — The mercury won’t soar close to any records, but a forecasted heat wave is still enough for Environment Canada to suggest some extra precautions.

The weather agency issued a heat warning on Tuesday, Aug. 16, for a majority of eastern Vancouver Island from Campbell River to Duncan.

It warns of an extended stretch of weather expected to see daytime highs creep into the low 30’s and overnight lows remain much warmer than normal for this time of year.

“A strong ridge is starting Tuesday and a ridge of high pressure will be strongest Wednesday and Thursday, that basically brings a lot of warm air from the south,” Johnson Zhong, meteorologist with Environment Canada told NanaimoNewsNOW.

Daytime high temperatures for the Nanaimo region will range from 29 to 33 through until at least Thursday, Aug. 18, with parts of Oceanside expected to be a degree or two cooler.

Environment Canada’s official definition of a heat warning, the criteria which triggers one for the Vancouver Island region, is at least two consecutive days of 29 degrees or higher, with overnight temperatures no lower than 16 degrees.

The heat wave, not atypical for this time of year, is not expected to last long.

“Friday, an upper trough is approaching the B.C. coast again, so the temperature will moderate to just a couple of degrees about normal,” Zhong added.

Environment Canada recommends to stay inside or in cool, shady outdoor places during the hottest times of the day and monitor for symptoms of heat stroke.

Seniors, young children, those who are pregnant or who have chronic illnesses are especially susceptible.
