Campfire ban coming for Coastal Fire Centre

Aug 3, 2022 | 11:55 AM

NANAIMO — The recent string of dry, hot weather has finally forced the hand of local fire officials.

The Coastal Fire Centre said a campfire ban will come into effect for Vancouver Island and all parts of the centre, except Haida Gwaii, beginning Thursday, Aug. 4 at 12 p.m.

It means all open fires will be banned in the Coastal Fire Centre, following the banning of larger category two and three fires in mid-July.

Cooking stoves which run on gas, propane or fire bricks, along with portable campfire pits running off similar fuels are not included in the ban.

The Coastal Fire Centre said the bans will be in place until Oct. 28, however, prohibitions are regularly lifted much earlier as fall conditions take hold through September.

Fire starts in the region are well down from last year, with roughly a quarter of fires reported so far this year compared to the same time in 2021.

A cool, wet spring which extended through much of June and into July is responsible, with conditions in the backcountry remaining relatively damp until recently.

A small handful of fires have been reported on Vancouver Island over recent days however all have since been extinguished.

More information on active wildfires in B.C. is available through the BC Wildfire Service.
