Alleged break-in/sexual assault in Nanoose Bay remains under police investigation

Aug 3, 2022 | 2:46 PM

OCEANSIDE — A man will appear in court this fall following an alleged break-in and sexual assault in Nanoose Bay last week.

On July 30 around 5:15 a.m., police responded to a call about a man who had allegedly broken into a home in the Morello Rd. area and sexually assaulted the resident before taking off.

Sgt. Shane Worth with the Oceanside RCMP said the suspect was arrested a few hours later.

“The man was located by police and arrested at approximately 11:00 the same morning. He was released on bail later in the day and will be appearing in court in Nanaimo in September.”

Details about whether this was a random attack or if the victim and suspect knew each other are still under investigation, however, Worth said they’ve had no other recent reports of similar incidents in the area.

He said there was a lot of information about this incident being spread on social media.

“The community was aware of the suspect’s description we were looking for based on the small community where it happened, and we were able to locate the person in the vicinity of Morello Rd. later in the morning.”

In reference to social media speculation about who’s allegedly responsible, Worth said people should proceed with caution before posting unverified information online.

“We would just caution people not to be super hyper-vigilant or take matters into their own hands. If you see something that doesn’t look right in your community or think is suspicious, give us a call and we’ll come investigate it and deal with it.”

Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Oceanside RCMP detachment at 250-248-6111 and quote file number 2022-7268.

The suspect’s name cannot be reported at this time as no charges have been laid.

Charge approval is up to the discretion of the B.C. Prosecution Service.
